Lot 2472 CUSTOM WINCHESTER .500 CALIBER P-14 BOLT ACTION

RIFLE. Cal. 12.9X6.8MM JDJ (500 A-Square Short). S# W229630. Bbl. is Creighton 24 3/8" including 1 1/8" Buhmiller 10 port muzzle brake with dovetailed sourdough front sight in ramped base attached to top of brake. Created using a British proofed Pattern 14 action made by Winchester having "E" marked safety. Many custom features on the action: stepped floorplate area of triggerguard straightened, bolt handle altered to conventional shape, Dayton Traister single stage trigger, altered to cock on opening, feed system altered for its larger caliber, recoil block added to bottom of barrel, bolt electro numbered to match receiver plus Lyman 48RS sight added at right rear of receiver. Barrel caliber marked as "500 S R E" (Short Range Express ?) which is 500 caliber derived from shortening the 500 A-Square as developed by JD Jones of SSK Industries. Uses 460 Weatherby Magnum cases as the basis for the cartridge with a final case length of 2.5". Original 500 A-Square was developed in 1976 by Col. Arthur Alphin after an unpleasant African experience with a 458 Win. Mag. 500 A-Square is the most powerful "sporting" cartridge delivering just over 8,000 foot pounds of energy at about 2,400 FPS; likely the short JDJ version is not far behind. Walnut stock set has its serial number stamped into the barrel channel and is glass bedded using Accraglass by Brownell's. Scalloped checkered steel grip cap, Winchester style checkering panels, straight comb, raised cheek piece and Pachmayr basket weave patterned solid black recoil pad; 13 5/8" LOP. CONDITION: very good appearance with some small spots of scattered peppery oxidation along with small spot of finish loss on top of barrel 2" forward of forend. Stock has numerous handling marks to include checking of finish along with runs in finish on right side of buttstock. Stock has a crack beginning at rear of magazine box and another extending to 1" behind top action tang; highly recommend repairing before use due to its large recoil. Rough slots in guard screws. Near excellent bore. PROVENANCE: From the Buckstix Collection. (25-6514/NW). MODERN. $2,250-3,500.
